Sustainable Communities & Neighbourhoods
Create and Support Sustainable Communities and Neighbourhoods by providing housing of diverse sizes and types. We want households and families to live here for the long-term with viable options to downsize while remaining in the community.
Large capital projects that are not centred on people or community are less likely to prioritise the needs and concerns of the citizens, and long-term sustainability is questionable. Limerick’s neighbourhoods and communities must remain central to all local government decisions to ensure a greater chance of long-term viability and success of the City, and a divisive approach to public consultation and public service must stop as it is not effective.
Discourage the volume of through-traffic that use our residential streets and laneways as shortcuts into the city centre. These are our outdoor spaces where children and the elderly walk, linger and play. A Road and Street Hierarchy Strategy would encourage proper use of our city streets and in turn would support our city centre communities.
Support the growth and sustainability of local communities by ensuring that all housing projects provide a mix of housing types, sizes and tenure. At present, too many housing developments provide 1- and 2-bed apartments with little outdoor space. The densities required in the Development Plan only support 1- and 2-bedroom apartments, which brings about transient communities with few long-term residents to act as caretakers of the public realm or outdoor spaces.
